Environmental and Engineering Managers

Environmental and Engineering Managers Ltd (EEM) 25th Anniversary – THE EEM JOURNEY

Establishing EEM

EEM celebrates its 25th year offering engineering services to companies in Jamaica. Mrs. Ianthe Smith, (Civil and Environmental Engineer), had a vision to one day offer her services as a Consultant. Together with the support of her husband and fellow engineer Ernie Smith (Electrical Engineering and Engineering Management), they established EEM in February 2001 as the Principals and Directors of the company.

Mrs. Smith was the sole “employee” for many years covering the technical, commercial and administrative functions. She served as Managing Director from the startup of the company in 2001 to March 2016. Ernie joined the company full time in 2008 and assumed the Managing Director role in April 2016.

In the early days, in addition to the consulting services, Ianthe also took on several young and recently minted engineers who found sourcing a job in the market challenging. They were able to gain valuable experience through her mentorship and later obtained employment in corporate entities both locally and internationally in furtherance of their careers. She still maintains contact with most of her mentees.

EEM Clients

The Company’s primary clients have been and continue to be in the industrial sector, and we take this opportunity to make mention of our earliest Clients who helped to build the company. These include Alcan Jamaica (now Windalco) and Juici Beef Ltd. We also salute our longstanding Clients namely, J. Wray & Nephew (now Campari), New Yarmouth Estate, Appleton Estate, the Spirits Pool Association, Worthy Park Estate, National Rums of Jamaica and Everglades Farms.

We make special mention of the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPSCo.) who trusted the company to undertake the first Environmental Impact Assessment for a windfarm at Munro, St. Elizabeth. This helped to cement EEM’s position as a strong Environmental Consultancy service provider for renewable energy projects – wind, solar and hydropower.

The Seprod Group is also one of our primary clients and we thank them for their continued support over the years.

EEM partnered with the University of the West Indies (Mona Campus) in implementing several projects to reduce its energy consumption. These included:

  • EEM as the Lead Consultant for the development of the UWI Cogeneration Facility (Phase 1) – referred to as the UWI AC Service Park and the associated underground Chilled Water Pipeline System.
  • Implementation of a Campus wide energy conservation measures for thirteen (13) high energy use facilities on campus and six (6) main halls of residence. The project  focused on lighting, power factor correction and air conditioning which, at the end of calendar year 2010, led to a net reduction of 4% of energy consumed by the campus compared to 2009. This achievement was against the background of substantial improvements to the building infrastructure on campus including the renovation of existing buildings and construction of new buildings.

Collaboration with International Partners

EEM collaborated with international partners over the years including Hatch, a Canadian Consulting Firm in assessing and developing energy efficiency recommendations for various companies in the Jamaican Private Sector (Industrial companies & Hotels) and provided local support for several of their consulting projects in Jamaica.

EEM also had a successful collaboration with Studio Ing. G. Pietrangeli S.r.l., an Italian company that undertook prefeasibility and feasibility studies for eleven (11) potential hydropower sites across Jamaica for the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ). EEM conducted all the environmental and social assessments for these studies.

EEM has also undertaken several assignments for International Multilateral Agencies over the years including CIDA, UNITAR, World Bank, UNDP and the IDB.

EEM at 25 Years

Today, in addition to Ianthe and Ernie, the company has a core team of three (3) environmental engineers, one (1) environmental scientist and one (1) Administrator. This Team is supported by several Associates with specialist skills, many of whom previously worked as members of the EEM core Team.

With the support of our clients, we hope to continue to grow from strength to strength and continue to provide exceptional service within the sector and to Jamaica as a whole.

~ Thank you to all who have contributed towards building our company~
